Vanier College Television celebrates its first anniversary

Last month, Vanier College celebrated the first anniversary of VTV – Vanier College Television, the college’s online television station.

“We are thrilled with what we’ve accomplished since VTV was launched,” says Darren Becker, Director of Communications and Corporate Affairs. “In its first year of operation, VTV produced over 175 videos that were seen by close to 200,000 viewers. As well, our videos are shared on different platforms that reach thousands of followers on different social media sites including Instagram, Facebook. You Tube and Twitter.”

Based out of Vanier’s Department of Communications and Corporate Affairs, VTV produces both live and prerecorded content aimed at strengthening Vanier’s sense of community, increasing public awareness of Vanier College and providing an outlet for students to submit their work and produce videos themselves. This approach to college television is unique in the Quebec college system and is an asset for the student body as well as faculty and staff.

“Research shows that students who are engaged are successful in their studies and VTV has provided students with a unique opportunity to be involved. A call this year for students to apply for volunteer positions producing content for VTV received 125 student applicants – all of exceptionally high caliber. Students applied to work as directors, editors, researchers, reporters, social media managers and on-air show hosts and interviewers. We could not be happier with the growing enthusiasm students have expressed for VTV,” says Darren Becker.

VTV was launched in August 2014 and reaches a potential audience of over 6,700 full-time Diploma students, more than 2,000 part-time evening students attending Vanier through Continuing Education, over 1,000 college faculty and staff members, and large numbers of followers among Vanier alumni and high school students who have discovered VTV.

VTV airs weekly features and live streams major events taking place on campus that can be viewed in real-time on lap-tops and smartphones.
